Built-in customer details cover name, email, phone, country and a few more. To keep track of anything else (VIP level, industry, where they came from, birthday...), create a custom field.
There is only one set of custom fields for the whole site, under Settings → Custom fields. The Marketing → Email tools → Custom fields page is now just a shortcut that takes you there.
1. Create a field
In the admin, go to Settings → Custom fields → "+ Add field":
- Field code: starts with a lowercase letter and uses only lowercase letters, digits and underscores, e.g.
vip_level. Broadcasts use this code, so don't change it casually once it's in use - Display name: what you see in the admin, e.g. "VIP level"
- Type: single-line text / multi-line text / number / date / yes-no / dropdown (a dropdown needs options, one per line)
2. Fill in a customer's value
Open any customer's detail page and scroll to "✏️ Custom fields". Dropdowns take one of the options, numbers must be numbers, dates are picked from the calendar.
3. Use it in broadcasts and emails
Write {{vip_level}} (the field code inside double curly braces) in a broadcast or email template. When it's sent, each customer sees their own value. Customers without a value get an empty spot, so you can write {{ vip_level | default: "member" }} to give a fallback word. You can also click it in the "Custom" group of the email editor's variable panel.
4. Bring values in with an import
In Customers → 📥 Bulk import, any CSV column whose header equals a field code (e.g. a column named vip_level) is filled into that field automatically. An invalid cell (an option the dropdown doesn't have, text in a number column...) is skipped on its own and listed in the error details on the result page with its row and column; the rest of that row is imported as usual.
5. Let your AI do it
Tell your AI:
- "Create a custom field: VIP level, code vip_level, dropdown with Gold / Silver / Standard" → it uses
upsert_customer_field - "Set zhang@example.com's VIP level to Gold" →
set_customer_field;get_customerreads it back - "What custom fields do we have?" →
list_customer_fields
AI won't delete fields: deleting a field also deletes every value customers already have in it, so do that yourself under Settings → Custom fields.
