Cross-border e-commerce

Cross-border e-commerce: multi-currency, payments and tax

Overseas visitors see prices and pay in their local currency; add Apple Pay / Google Pay, buy now pay later and PayPal to checkout; collect EU VAT, UK VAT and US sales tax by country or state.

On this page
These are cross-border e-commerce features and only appear on e-commerce sites that have them (Cross-border → Cross-border e-commerce in the admin menu: Multi-currency, Cross-border payments, Cross-border tax). Other sites do not see these pages and the AI cannot call these tools there.

Multi-currency

  • US visitors see USD, euro-area visitors see EUR, UK visitors see GBP — and checkout charges that currency. Money still goes to your own Stripe, which converts it to your payout currency.
  • Product prices stay as you entered them; only the copy shown to the visitor and sent to checkout is converted.
  • Rates are the ECB daily reference rates, refreshed every 24 hours. If a refresh fails the previous rates are used; if rates were never fetched, the original currency is used.
  • Optional rounding: none / whole / .99 / .95 (always rounds up).
  • Visitors can also switch currency on the shop page.
  • Tell your AI: "Turn on USD, EUR and GBP and round to .99" — set_ecom_currency; read with get_ecom_currency; preview with preview_ecom_price; refresh now with refresh_ecom_fx_rates.
  • To try the flow, set the rate source to test (fixed fake rates) with Stripe test keys — switch back to frankfurter before selling for real.
  • Current limits: subscriptions stay in the original currency; JPY / KRW cannot be used as a checkout currency yet.

Cross-border payments

  • In admin → Cross-border payments: Apple Pay / Google Pay, Klarna / Afterpay·Clearpay / Affirm (buy now pay later), PayPal via Stripe (cart checkout).
  • Only you can change these in admin, with a two-factor code each time. Your AI can only read them (get_ecom_payments).
  • Apple Pay needs your domain registered with your Stripe — use "Register this site's domain" on that page (also needs the code).
  • Methods that cannot take an order's currency are hidden automatically at checkout.
  • PayPal via Stripe is available only to Stripe accounts registered in Europe / the UK, and must also be enabled in your Stripe dashboard.

Cross-border tax

  • Rates live on your shipping zones (the same zones as shipping) and can be set per country or state inside a zone.
  • Tell your AI: "Apply the EU VAT preset with tax-inclusive prices for Europe" — apply_ecom_tax_preset (eu_vat / uk_vat); "Set 7.25% sales tax for California" — set_ecom_tax_rate; read with list_ecom_tax_rates; preview with quote_ecom_tax.
  • Presets are transcribed standard rates — have you or your accountant check them. Reduced rates are not included.
  • Tax-inclusive display: on sites that add tax at checkout, visitors from zones with this option see gross prices on product pages; the cart still shows a tax line and the same total.
  • This system calculates and records tax based on the rates you configure. It does not file or remit tax for you and does not guarantee the rates are current.
