Getting started

Cross-border store: tax presets, importing past reviews, warehouse return addresses, currencies and platform approvals

One-click EU VAT (27 countries) and US state sales tax (state base rates); import the real reviews from your old store (labelled Imported); send returns to an overseas warehouse or a third-party returns point; display vs settlement currency; which payment methods, social channels and tracking services need a separate application.

These are cross-border store features: only sites with the cross-border store module and the industry set to E-commerce have them (admin: Cross-border → Cross-border store; AI tools are in the Cross-border store group: list_tool_groups, then run_tool).

1. Tax presets in one click

  • The Cross-border tax page has three presets with an Apply button; or tell your AI "apply the US state sales tax preset" (apply_ecom_tax_preset)
  • eu_vat: standard VAT rates of the 27 EU countries (tax-inclusive prices on product pages by default)
  • uk_vat: UK 20%
  • us_sales_tax: state base rates for the 50 states and DC — county, city and district local taxes are not included (the real combined rate is often higher); the 5 states without a state sales tax (AK / DE / MT / NH / OR) are set to 0
  • Each country or state is written to the shipping zone it currently falls into; rates you already set are kept (ask your AI to overwrite if you want)
  • These are transcribed rates, not live data: the page shows the data date, which entries are marked to verify (recently changed or special), and which were rounded to 0.01%. Have you or your accountant check them after applying
  • In the US, only collect in states where you are registered: remove the other states afterwards (list_ecom_tax_rates to see them, set_ecom_tax_rate to remove)
  • We calculate and record tax at the rates you set; we do not file or pay tax for you

2. Import past reviews

  • New store with no reviews? Import the reviews you really received in your old store or on another platform: tell your AI "import this review file" and it calls import_ecom_reviews
  • CSV header: product_handle (product slug or id), rating (1–5), title, body, reviewer_name, review_date, reply (your reply at the time, optional). Judge.me and Shopify review exports mostly work as they are. You can also dictate reviews one by one to your AI (manual entry)
  • Up to 200 per import; do a dry run first to see which rows have problems (product not found, bad rating, unreadable date)
  • Imported reviews carry an Imported label on the product page and in the admin and are never marked as verified purchases; the same product + name + text is skipped on a re-run, so nothing doubles
  • Published right away by default, or put them in the pending queue first; check with list_ecom_reviews (source import)
  • Only import real reviews: do not invent, rewrite or change ratings

3. Returns to an overseas warehouse or third-party returns point

  • Return address book: save a few addresses (your own, an overseas warehouse, a third-party returns point) and pick a default. Tell your AI "add a return address: US warehouse ... make it the default" and it calls set_ecom_return_addresses (replaces the whole list — it reads the current one with get_ecom_return_addresses first)
  • When approving a return, pick an address for that order (dropdown in the return detail in the admin, or addressId on update_ecom_return); otherwise the default is used
  • The chosen address (recipient, address, phone, note for the buyer) goes into the buyer return instructions, on the order page and in the email. The address name in the book is only for you

4. Display currency is not settlement currency

  • With multi-currency on, shoppers see and pay in their own currency (say EUR)
  • Once the money reaches your Stripe it is settled in your account payout currency (say USD): Stripe does that conversion and charges a currency conversion fee (per Stripe pricing), at the Stripe rate at settlement time
  • To avoid the extra conversion, add a bank account in that currency in your Stripe Dashboard (available for Stripe accounts in some countries)

5. What needs a separate application

The Cross-border payments, Social commerce and Parcel tracking pages each list this at the top. Items marked Apply separately only take effect after you apply on that platform and are approved (review times are up to each platform):

  • Klarna / Afterpay / Affirm / PayPal: turn them on under Payment methods in your own Stripe Dashboard; some need a review and are limited to Stripe accounts in certain countries (PayPal: Europe / UK accounts only). Apple Pay / Google Pay need no separate application (Apple Pay only needs your domain registered with Stripe). Your AI can read get_ecom_payments; only you can switch methods in the admin
  • TikTok Shop: apply as a seller in Seller Center first (business document review, often 1–3 weeks); API sync also needs partner approval
  • Instagram Shopping: create a shop in Meta Commerce Manager and pass the commerce eligibility review
  • Parcel tracking: real tracking needs an API account with 17TRACK or AfterShip; using the UPS / FedEx / DHL APIs needs a business account with that carrier first
